Pennsylvania Ballet believes that the arts should be accessible to all. In 2016, Pennsylvania Ballet launched its first sensory-friendly performances for individuals with unique sensory needs and their families, striving to break down the barriers between individuals with learning, sensory, and/or social disabilities and the performing arts. By shifting expectations and demands, Pennsylvania Ballet is able to share the magic of ballet with hundreds of individuals who might not have the opportunity otherwise, making the concert-going experience impactful for all.
During these special programs, individuals are given space to move around, permission to speak during the performance, and areas to decompress. Pennsylvania Ballet has created pre-show Programs and Facility Guide Books for individuals and their families, designed to outline the story of ballets with visual images and provide the layout of the theaters. In partnership with Art-Reach, Pennsylvania Ballet prepares and trains the house staff for the performance, making sure the experience is safe and comfortable for all involved. Pennsylvania Ballet was the first resident company of the Kimmel Center to offer sensory-friendly performances.
